Jewish Care Victoria continues to work diligently to safeguard the wellbeing of elders and staff across all our services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are very disappointed to advise that an elder at Gary Smorgon House has tested positive overnight to COVID-19.

As a result, and under the auspices of the Public Health Unit, Gary Smorgon House has been placed into lockdown and we are unfortunately again in the position of elders having to isolate, remain in their rooms and not leave the home.

As a precaution, all elders will undertake a rapid antigen test (RAT) today. Staff will continue with daily RAT testing and will return to wearing full PPE.

Visitation across the entire home has been restricted and elders and families have been advised of the revised visitation protocols. Each elder will be allowed one visitor per day. The visitor will be required to undertake a RAT on arrival, wear full PPE (including N95, face shield, gloves and gown) and visit only in the elder’s room.

Jewish Care will continue to offer supports to all elders to exercise, undertake activities and remain in contact with family and loved ones during this time.

“We are working closely with the State Public Health Unit, Alfred MATS and the Commonwealth Department of Health in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak and are awaiting their direction regarding the expected length of the outbreak or any further outbreak management requirements”, said Mike Debinski, Interim Chief Executive Officer.

“We urge everyone in our community to comply with the Victorian Pandemic Orders regarding isolation requirements. Please do not visit our homes if you have the slightest of signs or symptoms, are awaiting a test result, have been notified that you are a household or household-like contact or are in isolation”, continued Mike Debinski.
