The third oldest in a family of 10 children, Rabbi Nerenberg was born in the US and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended High School and Rabbinical School in New York, and then volunteered in a boys High School near Montreal, Canada.
He moved to Melbourne in 2006 after marrying his Australian wife, Rochel. They are now the proud parents of five boys and two girls. Their children can constantly be seen assisting with the Kiddush and interacting with the residents at Gary Smorgon House on Shabbat and Jewish holidays.
Rabbi Nerenberg began working for Jewish Care in 2007, first as assistant rabbi and Kosher supervisor at Montefiore Homes, and then as facility rabbi of Gary Smorgon House upon its opening in 2009. He also serves as the acting Director of Jewish Life Services.
He often reflects how meaningful it is to work as a rabbi in aged care: “A pulpit rabbi may see their congregants once a week or even only a few times a year, but I see the residents almost every single day. I truly get to know them and their family members and can develop close relationships with them. This makes their transition into aged care much smoother and more enjoyable.”
