Next Generation of Jewish Leaders

08 January 2018

Yesod participants and Jewish Care Victoria board members came together to celebrate a year of inspiration, learning, and success at an end of year celebration on 13 December 2017.

Hebrew for ‘foundations’, Yesod, Jewish Care’s Board Foundations Program is a ten-month program that engages young professionals aged 27-40 in gaining a solid understanding of  board leadership and governance best practice ,and the professional duties and responsibilities of not-for-profit board members.

In 2017, the unique program saw 11 participants complete Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) modules integral to guiding their active participation in Jewish Care sub-committees, as well as one-on-one mentoring with Jewish Care board directors matched according to interests and skills.

Yesod participants also took part in interactive workshops and heard from inspiring speakers, including Cynthia Payne, Simon McKeon, Peter Edwards, and Jeff Kennett who gave unguarded and invaluable insight into their personal and professional lives.

“When young people’s opinions are sought and valued in decision making, it’s not just the organisation that benefits.  A greater understanding and respect is developed, improved confidence is generated through the learning of new skills, and a stronger sense of belonging is created,” Jewish Care CEO Bill Appleby said of Yesod. “These experiences have the potential to positively impact on the entire community, creating a strong, cohesive and connected community.”

Of the value of participating in Yesod, 2017 participant Jesse Kochen said “In providing young adults like myself with an opportunity to both connect with their community and develop the next generation of Jewish leaders, Yesod has separated itself as the premier leadership and community engagement program for the next generation of Jewish leaders. I feel privileged to have been part of the Yesod program.”

Jewish Care is accepting applications for the 2018 Yesod Program. To apply, contact Sue Hanzalik on [email protected] or 8517 5763. Applications close on 1 February 2018.
