31 July 2020
On Wednesday 29 July 2020, Jewish Care’s Gary Smorgon House was put into lockdown on advice from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
The precaution was taken because a member of our catering service provider’s team had tested positive to COVID-19. The infected individual last worked at Gary Smorgon House on 19 July 2020. To date, no close contacts have been identified amongst Jewish Care’s Elders or staff. Kitchen staff identified as close contacts were immediately contacted and quarantined.
Bill Appleby, CEO said, “We are working extremely closely with state and federal authorities and testing of Elders and staff at Gary Smorgon House is starting today, Friday 31 July 2020”.
“We will continue to offer supports to all Elders, taking every precaution to ensure staff and Elder wellbeing”, Appleby added.
“We are so appreciative of the support in messages and provisions we are receiving from our community including most notably:
- Jack & Robert Smorgon Families Foundation for assisting us to provide newspapers, magazines, crosswords, puzzles, art sets to our Elders
- SmartAid, the Holckner Family and TOM:Melbourne for adding to the supply of face shields for our staff
- The Australian Jewish News for providing complimentary papers for our Elders
“The overwhelming support we are receiving are wonderful motivators and we cannot express enough how grateful we are to our dedicated staff and leadership team for their ongoing commitment to those we support”, said Appleby.
