Breaking New Ground on Active Living Centre

14 May 2019

Jewish Care Victoria has marked the beginning of construction on the Anne & Eric Smorgon Active Living Centre in Caulfield with a ground breaking event on 14 May, 2019.

Due for completion in early 2020, the $7.15 million Anne & Eric Smorgon Active Living Centre is being built adjoining Gary Smorgon House as part of Jewish Care's 'Growing. For our Community.' Capital Campaign.

The Centre is being named to acknowledge the longstanding support of the Jack & Robert Smorgon Families Foundation. In addition to supporting a number of Jewish Care projects and developments, the Foundation have committed $2 million to the Capital Campaign, in particular, the Active Living Centre project.

Members of the Jack and Robert Smorgon Families Foundation, Jack Smorgon AO, Val Smorgon OBE, and Vicki Smorgon, in addition to a number of other family members, were on hand to turn the first sod of earth at the site.

With four generations in attendance, Val Smorgon OBE, former president of Montefiore Homes, said; "Strengthening communities and supporting community organisations, such as Jewish Care, is not just something that Jack, Robert, Vicki and I are committed to, but something our entire families are passionate about."

The Active Living Centre will support healthy ageing for Elders living at Gary Smorgon House and independently in the local community, providing a range of allied health services, consulting rooms and a gymnasium.

The modern facility will also feature meeting and administrative rooms, training and outreach services, respite services for the wider community, and a new dedicated shule. The entrance to Gary Smorgon House and ground floor community spaces, including the café, will also be refurbished as part of the construction.

Susie Ivany, Co-Vice President of Jewish Care thanked all supporters in attendance, saying; "By supporting this and our other Capital Campaign projects, you are part of something truly historic and instrumental in shaping the future care of our community."
