Prevention
Prevention strategies may not stop someone from experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Ultimately it is their choice to do so. However, we as parents can do our best for our children by:
- Staying informed in regards to all kinds of legal and illegal substances and understanding their effects on the mind and body.
- Being aware of what our children, parents and friends are doing. Keeping in touch will allow us to notice any worrying signs and behavioural changes.
- Addressing the risk factors involved when using any substance.
- Before festivities and parties, speaking to children about being aware of their limits and what they and their friends are using; reinforcing the idea of friends looking after each other and providing them with emergency contact numbers.
- Shock-tactics may be used for some, however, others may not respond well to them. By assessing each individual separately you will know which strategies will suit best.
- Having your children understand that you are available for them if they need to.
- Reminding your children that they have a family and social circle that loves them and cares about them.
