Technology Connects Jewish Elders Across the World

In a first for Jewish Care, elderly residents in Melbourne used technology to touch base with their US counterparts in a new social networking project.

Called Gam Yachad (‘Also Together’), Skype video linked up residents of Jewish Care’s Montefiore Homes Community Residence and Gary Smorgon House with those in Ohio’s Menorah Park Centre for Senior Living.

The event, held last week, encouraged people to share stories, educate each other about residential aged care facilities and organisations, and connect Jewish people around the world.

Jewish Care Minister Rabbi Yoseph Nerenberg said lively conversation ensued as residents from both countries asked each other questions, talked about their lives, discussed personal histories and finished singing a song together. He said the favourite topic of discussion was, unsurprisingly, food!

“We have established a relationship to build on in the future,” Rabbi Nerenberg said. “The plan is for this to be an ongoing event between staff members and residents/clients of both organisations.”

“They have involved facilities throughout the world and would also be happy to coordinate sessions between ourselves and other like-minded organisations internationally.”
