Residents Celebrate Their New Independence at Glen Eira Villas

At 9.30am on Monday 15 April 2010, the first two residents of Jewish Care’s Glen Eira Villas celebrated their very own first independence day when they received the keys to their new villa on Glen Eira road.

Welcoming the two new residents, Bill Appleby, Jewish Care’s CEO commented, “Imagine a world in which every person has the freedom to create a meaningful life, make their own choices and pursue their own goals, regardless of ability. Imagine a world where a person’s qualities, gifts and capabilities are the focus, rather than their challenges or limitations. At Jewish Care, these are not just lofty ideals - but real life. This morning Bruce Rosengarten and I proudly welcome our new residents to a new home of respect, opportunity and independence surrounded by a caring community and a network of support. We look forward to welcoming the other residents of Glen Eira Villas and we wish them mazel tov in their new home.”

Built on the same site where Jewish Care established Victoria’s first permanent supported accommodation for people with a disability thirty years ago, the opening of Glen Eira Villas represents another first for Victoria. The new development for people with a disability uniquely blends independent living with a network of support.

“I am particular moved by Premier Brumby’s recognition of our vision and the contribution the Jewish community has made to the betterment of Victoria.”

“The Jewish values of family, kindness, respect and charity have helped shape the Victorian community,” Mr Brumby said at the launch of Glen Eira Villas in February. “This is because the Jewish community has been part of Victoria for so long and because a strong ethic of care is so central to the Jewish tradition. A person’s culture, their community, their faith and traditions are right at the heart of who that person is, which is why the Victorian Government is proud to support this development.

The Jewish community has long been a leading example of compassion and kindness and the Glen Eira Villas will provide people with a much needed culturally appropriate respite and disability care service,” the Premier said.

Commenting on the Premier’s words Mr Appleby said, “Our commitment to the values of respect and family, regardless of a person’s ability or circumstance, guides our response to the disability accommodation needs of the community. The centre of Glen Eira Villas’ visionary model is about strengthening community involvement,” he added. “I encourage the community to join together and make this a true hub of inclusion for all.”
