A Weekend of Welcoming at Gary Smorgon House

Jewish Care’s Gary Smorgon House celebrated both a brit milah as well a Hachnassat Sefer Torah this past weekend.

On Shabbat, 4 June, the community welcomed baby Chaim Akiva Nerenberg, son of Gary Smorgon House’s Rabbi Yoseph Nerenberg; and on Sunday, 5 June, welcomed a new Sefer Torah – both simchas bringing much joy to the residents and community at large.

The Sefer Torah was donated by Leon Schnall in honour of his parents, Jacob and Judith Schnall, both residents at Gary Smorgon House. The completion of a new Sefer Torah marked the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Leon and his parents and enables Beit Shlomo, the Gary Smorgon House shul, to conduct services with a third Sefer Torah.

“Leon’s generosity will leave a lasting legacy at Gary Smorgon House and positively benefits both our residents and the local Jewish community who regularly attend this very unique, hemish feeling shul.

Bringing the community together is what Jewish Care is all about. Our sensitivity to the unique cultural needs of the Jewish community, together with the highest standards of professionalism, is what sets us apart,” Bill Appleby, CEO Jewish Care, said.

The Hachnasat Sefer Torah procession was accompanied by music and dancing followed by a Seudat Mitzvah (festive meal) in Gary Smorgon House’s spacious ground floor lounge.
