Last night at the Windsor Hotel Grand Ballroom The Premier of Victoria Mr Ted Baillieu MLA launched Jewish Care Victoria’s historic 165th anniversary since its establishment in 1848. The Premier spoke glowingly of the contribution the Victorian Jewish community has made to the history and development of Victorian political, social, cultural and economic life and wellbeing. “The words ‘Jewish’ and ‘Care’ are synonymous. The notion of care, of welfare, of providing for those in need and in distress are all part of the Jewish psyche and the Jewish culture and the Jewish religion,” Mr Baillieu said.

Premier Launches 165 Years of Jewish Care in Victoria

Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu MLA will launch on March 20, Jewish Care Victoria’s historic 165th anniversary since establishment in 1848. When Premier Baillieu addresses more than 200 people, including members of parliament, dignitaries and guests at the Windsor Hotel, he will be walking distance from where Swanston Street’s Rainbow Inn once stood, where Jewish Care’s forefathers established the Melbourne Jewish Philanthropic Society “to assist the poor and distressed…with medical aid and a weekly stipend”.

At Jewish Care’s Gala Dinner, held 23 February at Leonda on the Yarra, David Smorgon OAM called on the community to champion Jewish Care’s 2010 Annual Appeal in support of people in crisis in our community. Mr Smorgon said he was “honoured to be the Patron of Jewish Care” and stressed the organisation’s vital role in responding to 5,000 people in crisis that call each year.
