B’nai B’rith’s 45 years of cheer

In a tradition spanning more than 45 years, a group of enthusiastic, dedicated B’nai B’rith members continue to bring joy and laughter to the lives of Jewish Care’s elderly residents.

Four members of the former Harmony Unit joined forces with Unit Re’ut members in May 1962 to form a benevolence committee which presented entertainment and refreshments at Montefiore Homes, soon expanding to Ashwood and Northcote Avenue.

The committee also co-ordinated a band of helpers and carers to assist elderly people living in their own homes.

When the Harmony Unit disbanded, Unit Re’ut undertook to continue its wonderful work and the now legendary ‘Golden Age Harmony Party’ was born.

Heading the crew is Haya Elisha, one of the original founders who was joined by Anita Feiger 10 years ago and later by Sonja Dobrecjer, Sonja Newman, Lorraine and Adrian Trytell, Geoff Simpson and Arnold Erlanger.

Together they ‘cook’ up a storm, organising concerts and serving delicious cake with frenetic enthusiasm every yom tov – and they are all in their 70s and 80s themselves!

The Golden Age Harmony Parties are highly anticipated and we thank the organising team for all their hard work and most of all, for bringing so much happiness to our residents.
